With Earth Day falling in the month of April, we wanted to take some time to recognize some of our brands that have a true commitment to protecting the safety of the environment. By being environmentally responsible, these companies make it easy for you to build a greener home and do your own part to protect our planet.

Enclume has used environmentally responsible practices in producing their range of stainless steel pot racks and other housewares products since the company's founding nearly 40 years ago. Rather than mass-producing pot racks in a pollution-emitting factory, Enclume makes products almost entirely by hand in workshops, making just 30 to 60 pieces at a time. In addition, all of the protective coatings and finishes on Enclume pot racks are non-toxic.

Both Proteak and John Boos & Co., producers of stainless steel and wood carts and tables, have certification from the Forest Stewardship Council, attesting to the fact that the wood used in their products is sourced from forests that are managed with environmentally responsible techniques. Trees in these forests are hand-selected for timbering, rather than mass-harvested, preserving wooded areas and preventing deforestation.

The factories run by John Boos & Co. strictly adhere to federal and local air quality guidelines, and all of the glues used in building their products are formaldehyde free or low-emission formaldehyde formulas, which helps keep the air cleaner for everyone to breathe. Proteak manages its own forests, and reclaims areas that have already undergone massive deforestation to allow wildlife and local flora to return to desolate places. In addition, their many plantations are responsible for capturing enough carbon dioxide to account for the emissions of more than 40 billion automobiles.
